Dalai Lama 'exhausted'

The Dalai Lamai has cancelled two foreign trips due to exhaustion and is having medical tests.

The exiled Tibetan leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner returned to his home in Dharamsala, northern India, on Sunday after a two-week visit to France, where he gave lectures on Buddhism and criticised Chinese policy in Tibet.

He was scheduled to travel to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, but doctors advised him to rest and have a thorough check-up, his aide Chhime Chhoekyapa said.

The 73-year-old spiritual leader will leave shortly for Bombay for "routine medical tests" in a hospital.

Mr Chhoekyapa said: "The doctors have assured us that there was no need for any concern, all he needs is good rest and check-ups.

"He is not feeling very well and it is mainly due to fatigue."

In France, the Dalai Lama criticised some aspects of Chinese rule over Tibet, the Himalayan country he fled in 1959 after an abortive uprising.
